Steps Up Snowdon “ Yr Wyddfa”
The Birch Thompson Memorial Fund held a special fund-raiser on 18 May 2024 when a wide age - range of supporters ascended Mount Snowdon.
The youngest person was 12-year-old Ethan Morris, grandson of Trustee Andy Morris: the eldest was founder Trustee of the Charity, Keith Berry who was aged 84 at the time of the climb. Ethan and Keith both climbed the first 1,000 steps with the rest of the group. There were another group of trustees and others who reached the top and helped raise funds for this much-need resource. The money raised will go towards the laying of an area at the back of Gelliwig with either natural grass or synthetic surface.
The Outdoor play area will commemorate the late Baroness Rachael Heyhoe-Flint who was one of the first Patrons in 1981 and an active supporter throughout her life. This included the provision of beds (some still in use), two minibuses (both still in use) and annual prizes for our Joe Loss Dance.
Rachael was a teacher with John Thompson at the Municipal Grammar School before she entered journalism.
The Birch Thompson Memorial Fund is Wolverhampton Charity established after the death of two Wolverhampton teachers Graham Birch and John Thompson that has Gelliwig in Porthmadog as a living memorial. It honours their contribution of a total of 64 years taking students on school journeys that provided life-long memories.
